Nutter: Work On DNC Preparations Begins Today

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has had a night to sleep on the news of the DNC coming to the city, and he's still elated at the news. Nutter says organization efforts begin today.

"It's just really great when a plan comes all together," Nutter says.

That plan began ahead of the 2012 DNC, when Nutter opted to bow out of the bidding process for that convention.

"While we're declining 2012, we're going to be first in line for 2016," he says. "And many of our efforts, different things we have done, were some of the building blocks to get ready for 2016."

A committee meets today to discuss the details of the DNC. Planning that and the World Meeting of Families at the same time won't be easy, Nutter says, but it's a good problem to have.

"Our shopping, our dining, our nightlife -- When you look at it in its totality, folks are recognizing Philadelphia has a whole lot to offer," he says. "The city is unified around this effort, and each of the pieces really fell into place for us. We're grateful, we're appreciative. And we're going to do our job."

He says it's time to shine a spotlight on Philadelphia.
