Race Against Clock For Broad Street Run Lottery Registration

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Time is running out to register for the Broad Street Run lottery.

Upwards of 40,000 people took part in last year's run and organizers are expecting a similar head count this year. Nearly 5,000 people did not get in, but race director Jim Marino points out that, unlike typical lotteries, the odds are still in your favor.

"People have to understand it's not like Powerball," Marino says. "There's like an 88 percent chance of getting selected in the lottery. That's been the number presented to us by our registration company."

Registration is offered at BroadStreetRun.com. It ends Friday at a minute before midnight. Then its up to a computer, says Marino.

"Random selection," he says. "It's been very successful. It gives all the runners an equal chance to acquire a spot no matter when they sign up during the 13 day period. We found it gives teachers a chance to do it at night, nurses that work different shift work and the various people that work a lot of different hours. It gives everyone an equal chance to get into the race.

Marino says those who are selected get notified when their credit card gets hit and also through email.

The Broad Street Run is set for Sunday, May 3, and once again it starts near Albert Einstein Hospital and ends at the Navy Yard.
