Camden County Man Accused Of Loan Scam

By Diana Rocco

GLOUCESTER TWP., N.J., (CBS) – A South Jersey man is accused of preying on homeowners trying to save their properties from foreclosure.

Police say 40-year-old Daniel Sheehan preyed on people already down in their luck.

"He's a con artist, very good at what he does."

This South Jersey woman who didn't want to be identified says she's out more than $10,000 and almost lost her home.

"I just couldn't believe that somebody took all that money from me, I worked a lot of overtime to get caught up," she said.

Sheehan allegedly told her he could save her from foreclosure. Instead of paying her mortgage she started giving him monthly payments for enrollment in what she thought was a loan modification program.

"He kept telling me that things would, it would take three months, it would take three months. And then three months would go by and it would be oh well they changed this process so now we have to do it this way so it will be three more months," she said.

Sheehan was allegedly cashing her checks. The mortgage company was never contacted and her mortgage wasn't paid in more than nine months.

"He's preying on people that are having hard times paying their mortgages and he's victimizing them even further, making a bad situation worse," said Gloucester Township Police Deputy Chief David Harkins.

Police know of at least eight other victims but say there could be dozens more.

"I just don't want to see him be able to this to anybody else."

Sheehan remains behind bars on $50,000 bail.

The woman Eyewitness News spoke to was able to save her home, but police believe there are many more victims out there and they are asking them to come forward.
