Bill Could Lead To Electronic Driver's Licenses In New Jersey
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Electronic driver's licenses could be a step closer to reality in New Jersey under a bill moving through the Legislature.
A state Senate committee approved a measure Monday that calls for the Motor Vehicle Commission to review an electronic driver's license program.
State Sen. Tom Kean Jr. says New Jersey should be at the "forefront of new technology" and that such a program could allow drivers to use their phones to show their driving credentials.
The bill aims to show the potential costs — and savings — of switching from a card to an electronic system.
The cost of the study would come out of the commission's budget.
