Promotion Ceremonies Held in North Philadelphia For Members of Philadelphia Police Dept.

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- About 120 members of the Philadelphia Police Department were promoted in rank today in a ceremony on the campus of Temple University.

"It's a large group, they've been waiting a long time.  They have earned the right to be promoted," Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey, at McGonigle Hall, told KYW Newsradio, "so it's something that they can be very proud of, along with their families."

The commissioner made a point during the ceremony about police officers treating citizens fairly.

"Some of the things that you've seen around the country is that there's this feeling that policing is not fair and impartial," Ramsey said.  "Not just policing, but the system in general.  And whether that's real, perceived, or a combination of both, we have an obligation to do everything we can to make it fair and impartial."

He said afterward that it's important to celebrate those promoted today:  "And now they're responsible not only for themselves, but for others, because they're supervisors."
