Philadelphians Cope With The Cold As Best They Can

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With temperatures in the teens and wind chills in the single digits, no one wanted to be outside for long Friday morning.

Benny, a taxi driver, pulled over to get some hot coffee.

"It's freezing cold," he tells KYW Newsradio. "That's why I've got my coffee to warm me up!"

This is a day so cold that just one layer won't do. Joann Brittingham of North Philadelphia was all bundled-up.

"I've got enough layers -- two pair of pants, a T-shirt, turtleneck, and a sweatshirt. And a scarf on the inside and a scarf on the outside -- with a hood."

On a day this cold, Joannis didn't leave anything in the closet. Either did Vernice Bradley, who works in City Hall and stepped outside to get a snack.

"Actually I have on four layers. But I have to wear the Councilman's jacket -- Councilman Ed Neilson. It's freezing."

With temperatures not expected to get out of the twenties, the Councilman may need his jacket back.

But everyone outside Friday can take heart that temperatures are expected to moderate all the way into the 40s this weekend.
