Officials: Possible Case Of Measles Being Investigated In Montgomery County

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- Officials say the Montgomery County Health Department is investigating a report of physician suspected measles in a 15-year-old male at Abington Memorial Hospital in Montgomery County.

The Montgomery County Commissioners Office says the patient has been evaluated and testing has been conducted to determine if it is the measles. They say specimens are being delivered to the State Public Health Laboratory.

Officials say the patient is self-isolation at home under the guidance of MCHD.

It is unclear if the teen was vaccinated or if he's been out in the public. Measles is not dangerous for those who have been vaccinated.

Dr. John Russel at Abington Hospital says the majority of the public has had the vaccine, is not at risk, and shouldn't be alarmed:

"You should feel very protected. It's not 100-percent protection, but it's in the upper 90's and that's what's so important about being vaccinated."

Doctors say anyone who feels they may be showing signs of measles should contact their physician immediately.

The investigation into the Montgomery County case is ongoing.
