Christie's Vaccination Comments In England Draw Some Local Flak

By Jim Melwert

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) --- With the measles outbreak now infecting more than 100 people from 14 states, potential presidential candidates are weighing in on the issue of vaccination.

In England yesterday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said his children are vaccinated, "but I also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So, that's the balance that the government has to decide," he said.

Christie's office later released a statement saying the governor believes, quote, "with a disease like measles, there is no question kids should be vaccinated."

There is clear consensus among medical professionals that vaccines are safe and effective, but parents have some conflicting opinions.

The comments from Governor Christie are not too popular here in Cherry Hill.

One man says, "I think he should probably keep his mouth shut when he doesn't have an expert opinion on things."

Another woman agrees, saying, "Are you kidding me? You're a father yourself, how could you say to that it's choice?"

And this man says, "He should be more concerned about New Jersey and less concerned about trying to appeal to the Tea Party."
