Bensalem Officer Dies During 5K Run In Northeast Philly

By Mike Dougherty

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) – Authorities say a detective with the Bensalem Police Department collapsed and died while participating in a 5K run in Northeast Philadelphia Saturday morning.

Detective Kevin Cornish suffered a massive heart attack shortly after the race began. He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Fred Harran with the Bensalem Police says the 42-year-old husband and father was just recognized by the Bensalem Rotary Club as Police Officer of the year

"So quiet about it. He's not the type of guy that he boasts about it. So many people are affected by him and he's made a difference in so many lives."

Harran says Detective Cornish chased down child molesters and other predators as part of the special victims unit.

"He actually stopped many people from becoming a victim because of all the bad guys he put in jail."

The following announcement was posted to the Bensalem Police Facebook page on Saturday:

It is with absolute regret that we must inform you that Detective Kevin Cornish passed away this morning. Kevin was a great person and will truly be missed by all who knew him. Please keep his family, friends and coworkers in your prayers.

Harran says Cornish was married and had an 11-year-old daughter. Cornish started his career with Bensalem Police in 1998.
