Bernice Gordon, Philadelphia Crossword Puzzle Constructor, Dies At 101

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bernice Gordon, a prolific constructor of crossword puzzles, has died at the age of 101.

A friend of the family who learned of Gordon's death from her son confirmed Friday that she died early Thursday at her Philadelphia home.

Gordon was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and raised three children before working as an artist and traveling around the world. She began creating the puzzles in her 30s and her work has been published in the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and brain-teaser books published by Dell and Simon & Schuster.

In an interview with The Associated Press on her 100th birthday a year ago this month, she said the puzzles made her life and that she constructed a new puzzle grid every day.
