2 Killed, Officer Hurt In South Philly House Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Fire officials say two residents are dead and a police officer was injured trying to rescue those victims during a house fire early Thursday morning in South Philadelphia.

The blaze broke out just before 1:30 a.m. in the first floor of a two-story rowhome on the 400 block of Daly Street.

Officials say a man and woman living in the home were trapped and killed. They were the only two people inside the home during the fire.

The officer was the first to arrive on the scene and suffered burns trying to save the victims inside. He was taken to Temple Hospital and the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time, but they are said to be non life-threatening.

Crews placed the fire under control in about 20 minutes. Officials say the home had no working smoke detectors.

There's no word yet what caused the blaze.
