Giordano: Gas Tax Leaders

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sadly, it's official. I just read that Gas Buddy.com reports that Pennsylvania has the highest gas taxes in the country. That's right, higher than New York and even higher than California. How is that possible? First, here are the figures. The combination of federal and state taxes in Pennsylvania is 68.9 cents per gallon. California is 63.7 cents per gallon. New York is 63.4 cents.

Who is responsible for this? First, Democrats loved voting for these taxes under the cover of a massive transportation bill. There is nothing new about this. However, Governor Corbett and Republicans like State Senator Dominic Pileggi thought these taxes would win support of voters and those who would receive some insider money. How did that work out?

It is amazing to me that now we're hearing some politicians say that even with these taxes we are still paying a lot less at the pump and now is the time to strike and hit us with another big tax for infrastructure. Now is the time to be alert and push back at the politicians that have already failed us.

I find it remarkable that just across the bridges in New Jersey we see gas as low as $1.63 per gallon and they pump the gas for you. I only hope Governor Corbett has to pump his own gas.
