What's Cooking on 1060: Coffee with Movies, Pizza with Kindness, and Literacy with Cooking

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After about a year of planning, Cinemug is finally open, at 1607 South Broad Street, near Tasker.

"So, the concept is a coffee shop with movie rentals," explains proprietor Dan Creskoff (top photo), "because I worked at TLA (Video) for a long time and people used to hang out and talk to us for an hour at a time and I thought, let's give these people a place to sit and a cup of coffee!  We have bagels and spreads, egg and cheese sandwiches, soups, and we bring in Cosmi (deli on South 8th Street) sandwiches."

Meanwhile, Rosa's Fresh Pizza, at 25 South 11th Street in center city Philadelphia, has been getting a lot of attention lately with a simple idea to help those in need:  prepaid pizza slices for homeless people.

Owner Mason Wartman (below) says donors can prepay $1 for a slice of pizza, then post a sticky note on his wall.

"And then a homeless person comes in, takes it off the wall, trades it in for a slice of pizza," he explains.

Recently, Wartman says, he's had lines out the door with good-hearted people wanting to pitch in.

"We were on the local news, then it kind of got picked up from there," he tells What's Cooking.   "Ellen Degeneres invited us on her show and it's gone a little bit viral.   I think people in, like, India and other countries know about it, too."

The Culinary Literacy Center at the Free Library of Philadelphia may be going strong, but coordinator Liz Fitzgerald (below) says it seems that not a lot of people know about their programming and free culinary classes.

"This whole program is really based on incorporating literacy skill-building in with nutrition education, and with cooking," she says, "so we work with organizations and with chefs to come up with ideas and then throw them on the calendar."

The free culinary classes and other events take place in the Free Library's new kitchen overlooking the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
