Magazine Ranks Philly The Second Best Shopping City...In The World

By Syma Chowdhry

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia has made plenty of "top spots" lists in the past few years, but this is a new one.

According to Conde Nast Traveler, Philly is the second best shopping city – in the WORLD.

"It's wonderful to see everybody appreciating the good bones that this city really has," says Meryl Levitz, the president and CEO of Visit Philadelphia.

The magazine notes the variety of vintage shops, like the ones found on North 3rd Street.

"It's a reflection, I think, of all the new shopping that's come up in the city that we never had here before," says Levitz.

In the article, the writer mentions the Reading Terminal market as one of the best shopping places in the city, although it's known more for being a foodie destination.

"We were pleasantly surprised and really honored," says Sarah Levitsky, the marketing director for the Terminal. "Food has become really a hobby for people now, and I guess that's probably partially why we were included in the shopping category."

The Reading Terminal Market gives tourists a local experience.

"We have stores that specialize exclusively in Pennsylvania made goods. We are a unique spot," Levitsky says.

So, what's number one on the list you might ask? Paris? New York?

Nope. Barcelona, Spain is Traveler's top pick. In fact, New York is 23rd and Paris clocks in dead last at 24th.

Huh?

Of course, many Philadelphia shoppers are not surprised by all the hype.

"I kind of believe it based on how I shop, yes," says Kelly Tatum.

"We think Philadelphia is the best -- first best, not second," says Suzanne Anderson.

"It's a very shop-able city with at least one of everything," agrees Linda Shein.

She's a retail expert and says this type of buzz could attract more businesses to the city.

"It's a pretty sophisticated market, and the rents are very affordable. It's very untapped, and there is a lot of opportunity," Shein says.

And with the Pope coming to Philadelphia this September, tourism experts believe the city will get even more international recognition.

"2015 will be a magical year for Philadelphia," agrees Meryl.
