Police Shown Gratitude On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Thanking police officers and wearing blue ribbons were among the things people were doing Friday for National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Frontline Guardian is an organization that does community outreach in places like sporting events recognizing the heroes of our country -- police, fire and military personnel -- all year round.
Retired Philadelphia police officer Tom Mellon, co-founder of Frontline Guardian, says National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day should be every day.
"There are all different personalities and there all different walks of life out there," Mellon says. "They never know what they may face from one minute to a next and it could be their last, but they are out there to protect the community, and without them we would be in bad shape."
Police departments, like at the University of Pennsylvania, bought their men and women on the force lunch for National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
"Our police officers are chameleons," says Maureen Rush, vice president for public safety and superintendent of Penn police. "They are fighting crime and taking care of 18-year-olds who are home sick and everything in between, and they have a tough job, and we wanted them to know this is one example of our gratitude for what they do each day."
Even the two K-9 officers of the force were shown appreciation with some special doggie treats.
