Volunteer Divers Search For Shane Montgomery Over A Month After His Disappearance

By Molly Daly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Divers returned to the Schuylkill River Sunday to search for Shane Montgomery, the West Chester University senior who went missing after a night out in Manayunk Thanksgiving Eve.

Fifteen divers from the all-volunteer Garden State Recovery Unit took part in this weekend's effort.

Unit president Sunny Longordo says the divers are concentrating on the shoreline adjacent to where Shane's keys were found, because it's likely the current pushed him to the river's the Manayunk side, where he could be snagged by debris:

"There's everything from tires and shopping carts that he could be tied up in, and that's the things that we check the most -- trees down in the water."

The search, in 40 degree water, is painstaking. Although they do have sonar, Longordo says the best technique for this effort is a basic:

"You run a rope off the boat, and the diver swims back and forth, left to right, letting out a little bit more line each time, so that the search area widens, and we cover things fully and completely."

Although Shane was not found Sunday, Longordo says the team's hearts are with the Montgomery family, and they want to do what they can to bring Shane home.
