Millions Hit The Road On One Of The Busiest Travel Days Of The Year

By Mike Dougherty

WAYNE, Pa., (CBS) -- Today is one of the busiest travel days of the year as millions have hit the road to either visit loved ones or to return home.

AAA Mid-Atlantic estimates about 100 million people will travel at least 50 miles.

"We had gone down to Baltimore to visit our son for Christmas and then we took a detour up to Gettysburg," said one traveler.

Despite the large volume of drivers, traffic was flowing smoothly on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

"We thought it would be a lot busier, but we're quite pleased with how the highways are. Loaded up, ready to finish out the holidays," said another traveler.

KYW Newsradio caught up with Karen and her family at the Valley Forge Service Plaza along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

She's from Pennsylvania and headed to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to visit loved ones she hasn't seen in a while.

With gas prices lower than they've been in years, Karen and the other drivers KYW Newsradio spoke with are happy to have a few extra bucks in their pockets.

"It sure helps. Absolutely helps," said Karen.

"It doesn't cost very much to fill up. You know, it doesn't put a big dent in the wallet," said another traveler.
