High School Graduation May Require Citizenship Test

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What is the Bill of Rights? How many Senators are in Congress? Who can veto a bill? Who said "Give me liberty or give me death?" Students in North Dakota may have to pass the US Citizenship test, responding to items from a 100 question list, as a graduation requirement if proposed legislation passes in January.

The proposal would take effect for the class of 2016. Other states are considering the same proposal: Arizona, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah, according to the Associated Press, with the purpose of gauging how much students know about American history, civics and government.
