Montgomery County Couple Sings About Their Home, Wins Enough Money To Buy It

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This will be a very special Christmas for a newlywed couple in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. They'll be celebrating in their own home, thanks in part, to a quarter of a million dollar prize they won for their song about their home.

As music teachers, Leslie Poprik and BJ Capelli thought they might not be able to get a mortgage from a bank. But when Leslie went to look into it at Wells Fargo in August, she noticed a flyer announcing a national contest -- tell us in a 30 second video what home means. Two winners had already been selected, but there was still time to enter the final round.

"BJ is a songwriter," Leslie said. "So I kind of tasked him with figuring something out."

"We were in the middle of a lot of craziness and planning all the wedding stuff," BJ added. "I was like, 'we don't really have time for that. We have so much going on right now.'"

But BJ got an idea for an up-tempo song with rapid-fire lyrics that did, indeed, define home for them.

"Rise 'n' shining, cook-out dinin', beer 'n' winin', that's what makes a place feel like home...Place for our dog to play, where we can get away, rock 'n' roll night 'n' day."

The video featured their dog, Berklee, playing the tambourine and an American Gothic recreation while BJ sang "marryin' my best friend, stay together till the end."

The day they returned from their honeymoon, they learned they'd won.

"We kind of sat there and said, is this real?," Leslie said.

They're still sort of giddy about it all. And BJ, a lifelong musician, has his first big hit.
