Head of Democratic Party in Philadelphia Points Finger at Kane For DA Quarrel

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- US Rep. Bob Brady, who also heads the Democratic Party in Philadelphia, says it's "a shame" to see the very public animosity between Pennsylvania attorney general Kathleen Kane and the city's top prosecutor, DA Seth Williams.  And he lays the blame on Kane.

Brady (D-Pa.) says he's been shaking his head over the sparring between Kane and Williams.

"It's a shame when we see that our chief attorney in the City of Philadelphia and the top attorney in the State of Pennsylvania can't get along," he tells KYW Newsradio.

And Brady faults Kane for challenging Williams to take over the case of the sting of state lawmakers -- a case she declined to prosecute.  He says she shouldn't be surprised that Williams took up the challenge.

"She gave our district attorney, Seth Williams, a challenge.  I know Seth very well, and you really don't want to challenge him.  And he took the challenge, and the result is what the result is.  So it looks like somebody dropped the ball on her end," Brady said today.

The congressman say it is too soon to tell whether Kane's handling of the matter would affect the support she might receive from Philadelphia Democrats in a reelection bid.

"There's a lot of time left.  People do make mistakes.  If you don't do anything, you don't make a mistake.  I make enough mistakes.  There's plenty of time (for local Democrats) to see what she does with the rest of the time that she's there."

Brady's comments come two days after Williams announced charges against two state representatives caught in the sting.  In announcing the charges, Williams said he was "disgusted" that the attorney general had suggested the investigation could be seen as targeting African-Americans.
