Drexel Women Visit Quinnipiac Tonight

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The Drexel women's basketball team is up in Hamden, Connecticut, tonight for a match-up with Quinnipiac.

The Dragons are 4-3 so far this season. Last time out on Sunday they lost on the road to a good Pittsburgh team, 72-53. Despite that defeat, head coach Denise Dillon thinks her team is headed in the right direction.

"I've seen a lot of growth early in the season," Dillon tells KYW Newsradio. "We come in this season with a lot of players who didn't have tremendous game experience in the past. They really have bought into what we're about, our system, our style. I think that's why we've pulled out some early wins. Just with that mentality. Really hoping that continues."

Tonight's game will be Drexel's first this season without junior point guard Meg Creighton. She is out indefinitely after suffering a knee injury.

Listen to Denise Dillon with KYW's Matt Leon:

"They're some big shoes to fill," Dillon says. "Meg Creighton has started every game for us since she stepped on campus. Now, in her junior year, she took on a whole different role of not only being a point guard out on the floor and getting those assists that she consistently gets, but she's scoring the ball as well. So we're counting on Alexis Smith, a sophomore, to move from really that scoring guard, that two guard, into that point position, initially, and then Carrie Alexander as well, as a junior, to take a lot of those minutes. I know they're eager. They always want to be out on the floor, but we need them to just remain patient and become comfortable in that position."

The Quinnipiac team Drexel matches up with tonight is 7-2 this season and on a four-game winning streak.

"What makes them good is their experience," Dillon says. "They're starting four seniors, they're just playing very well together. They are composed, they get the job done."

Tonight's game tips off at 7:00pm.
