Philadelphia Police Department Testing Out Body Cameras

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In an effort to bring more transparency to the force and help improve community relations, the Philadelphia Police Department is testing out body cameras.

This pilot program tests out six different kinds of body cameras on more than 30 police officers.

"When I exit my vehicle I turn it on," said police officer Damien Stevenson.

Stevenson, a six-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, says people in the community who he's encountered welcome the cameras.

"I've used it in at least four arrest investigations and it's been very useful in assisting in our investigation and details what we did step by step," said Stevenson.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says over the next six months, officers in the 22nd District will test out the body cameras.

"Whatever issues may come up as a result of having body-worn cameras we'll find out pretty quickly here in a test environment like the 22nd District," said Ramsey.

The department plans on eventually equipping all of their officers with whatever camera they pick from this test program.
