Water Main Break In North Philly Forces Daycare Evacuation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A major water main break forced the evacuation of a daycare center in North Philadelphia Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. on Germantown Avenue near Jefferson Street in the city's Kensington section.

According to water department officials, the water main break was approximately 20 inches in diameter.

The water main break sent water flowing into the street.

Water department crews were quickly dispatched to the scene and they were able to turn off the water main about 30 minutes after the break happened.

As a result of the water main break, workers at the Ummie's Kiddie Kottage daycare center on Germantown Avenue transported eight children to another daycare for the day.

Germantown Avenue is closed while crews work to repair the break.

Water department officials said the water main pipe dates back to 1893.

The incident remains under investigation.
