Bill Would Ease Transgender Birth Certificates In NJ
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Legislation has advanced that would make it easier for people who have changed their sex and names to get new birth certificates in New Jersey.
The bill approved by a state Senate committee on Monday would not require transgender people to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
State law currently requires the operation.
The bill would require the state to issue an amended birth certificate if a transgender person can show a court approved their name change and a form from a licensed health care provider showing the person has undergone clinically appropriate treatment for the purpose of gender transition or that the person has an intersex condition.
Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a similar bill last year.
