Construction Worker Struck, Killed In Chester County

NORTH COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) - Authorities say a construction worker was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night in North Coventry Township, Chester County.

This happened just before 11:15 p.m. on Route 422 westbound near Route 100.

Authorities says 60-year-old Lee Boyer, a construction supervisor at J.D. Eckman, Inc., was putting down cones when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene

The driver of the striking vehicle, 57-year-old Newstell Marable, stayed on the scene, according to authorities. There's no word yet if charges will be filed.

Route 422 was closed for about five hours overnight.

OSHA announced Thursday afternoon it has opened an investigation into the death of Boyer.

"OSHA would like to express its condolences to the family of the worker fatally injured," said Nicholas DeJesse, OSHA's area director in Philadelphia. "Fatalities occurring from vehicles striking workers happen all too often and are preventable. OSHA strongly encourages employers to utilize the proper safeguards to protect workers engaged in highway construction work."
