Local Woman's Fashion Blog Is "Filled With Helpful Tips Learned Along The Way"

By Kristina Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Writing, fashion and beauty are three things Ashley Basla is truly passionate about.

Ashley studied English Literature at Ursinus College and later completed fashion design courses at Philadelphia University. So to her, the next step was an obvious one.

She combined her passions and launched a blog, Sugarpeel, which she describes as "a destination, lifestyle brand filled with the helpful tips that I learned along the way."

She says she chose the name because "it is the combination of two different words. Sugar, meaning something sweet that you crave on a regular basis and peel, meaning layers as I always include personal anecdotes in my blogs. I wanted the name to be fun and sincere."

It is obvious when reading Sugarpeel that Ashley loves sharing her passion for all things fashion and beauty with her followers. "I truly enjoy every single time I write a post. I want my followers to feel the same positive energy when they read them and find something new or solve a fashion crisis."

She adds, "I hope that all of my followers feel good about themselves when they read Sugarpeel. Trends come and go, but it is more about interpreting these trends without compromising individual style."

But one trend she says has not gone out of style is "a vintage coat that my grandmother passed down to me. This classic coat stood the test of time and is still stylish today. It was such a special gift, but more importantly when I look at the photos, I see my mom. It's a sentimental post for me, a time capsule of three generations."

As for her number one fashion and beauty tip? "Most fashion enthusiasts will recommend having the perfect little black dress in your closet. I believe you need the perfect blazer. Having lived in Florence, I appreciate the European fashion philosophy. Build a wardrobe based on key pieces and supplement the rest. For example a well tailored blazer, a pair of boots, a versatile skirt, and a classic handbag. Also, always keep your favorite lipstick on hand, preferably the right shade of red. Even on a bad day, the red will brighten your mood and keep you confident and cheerful!"
