Penn Women's Hoops Off To Strong Start

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It has been a strong start to the season for the defending Ivy League women's basketball champion Penn Quakers.

They bring a 3-1 record into tonight's road game with Lafayette. Quakers have won three straight after a season-opening loss to #14 Tennessee down in Knoxville.

"Played well at times at Tennessee," Penn head coach Mike McLaughlin tells KYW Newsradio. "A real talented group that gave us some trouble on the glass. Came back and played La Salle, played really well (57-29 win). Played really well at Navy (60-51 win) and did a super job against New Hampshire the other night (74-39 win). So we're progressing. We're really getting some experience from our younger players, they're really growing. Our upper classmen that returned from last year's team have really done a good job making these kids feel really comfortable."

As usual, the Quakers are really getting it done on the defensive end. They are holding opponents to just 54.8 points a game and 33% shooting from the field. Tonight, they will take on a Lafayette team that is 3-2 this season.

"They remind me a little bit of where we were last year," McLaughlin says. "They are senior laden, they're a little bit older at key spots. Their guard play is very good with two seniors and a junior, senior post player. So they've played a lot of basketball together. They are very experienced, they're very well schooled."

Lafayette leads the all-time series between these two programs, 19-18.

Tonight's game in Easton gets underway at 7:00pm.
