In Center City, Schoolkids Get An Expert View of Singing and Musicmaking

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On the eve of his latest album release, a Philadelphia-area musician today visited a local charter school for a different kind of music lesson.
The 60 fifth- and sixth-graders at the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School, at 17th and Vine, got a visit from musician Paul Jost to teach them the art of "scat" and body percussion.
"Could be hitting your chest, or it could be hitting your face -- all that sort of stuff," Jost explains. "It's just using your body as an instrument."
He says the goal of the lesson is to get the children to find music everywhere in their lives.
"There's music all around us," he notes. "There's an airplane going overhead. There's a refrigerator running. There's a heater coming on, there's a chair that you can play. You can actually play the music stand -- it's not just there to hold the music."
