Car Slams Into House And Goes Up In Flames In Delaware; 1 Injured

By David Spunt

NEWARK, Del. (CBS)Crews were still on scene at Lower Valley Loop in Newark, Delaware Monday evening, after a car that slammed into a town home caused a massive fire.

"We lost everything. It's all gone," said resident Baharat Kothari.

Kothari says he accidentally drove forward but intended to back up his car to go shopping. His car hit a gas meter on the front of his town home.

"It exploded," Kothari told Eyewitness News.

Soon, his town home and several others were on fire. Eyewitness News spoke to neighbor Brian Archy, who says his family lost everything.

"That's a lot of stuff gone," Archy said.

Authorities say one neighbor was treated for smoke inhalation, but will be okay. Archy says his family dog is at the animal hospital after breathing in smoke. He expects his dog to survive.

Kothari says he is lucky to be alive, but upset that other families were also affected.

"It's very sad but luckily nobody is injured. Everybody is safe," he said.

Officials estimate the flames caused $300,000 in damage. The fire was ruled an accident by the Delaware State Fire Marshal.
