Reading's 'Pathetic,' 'Ugly' Holiday Tree To Stay Put

READING, Pa. (CBS) – Reading's "ugly" Christmas tree is staying.

The Charlie Brown-esque tree drew criticism from residents which then led to plans for a replacement.

But on Monday, officials announced the pretzel-topped tree – a nod to the city's bakeries – would be staying at 5th and Penn.

Despite calls from people around the country expressing their opinion on the town's holiday décor, "The City of Reading is both proud of and grateful for the holiday tree, a Norway Spruce, that was chosen from the beautiful hills that surround our great city and it will remain at 5th and Penn as a symbol of holiday Spirit."

Officials say the decision was also made, in part, due to the impending snow predicted for later this week. Apparently, City Council felt immediate efforts should focus on preparing city streets for the storm.

"We appreciate the community's interest in having our City beautifully decorated for the holiday season. As a result, not only do we have the tree at Penn Square and one in Centre Park, but a tree in City Park as well," said Mayor Spencer.

The new tree will either be placed in City Park or at the Penn Street Bridge Gateway to the City of Reading. As soon as the location is determined, an announcement will be made.

"The City of Reading welcomes the broader world to embrace this holiday tree, amidst its city surrounded by thousands of trees, and hopes it touches your heart with the true spirit and meaning of Christmas," a release on the tree concludes.
