Philadelphia Marathon Weekend Kicks Off With Runners' Expo in Center City

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Marathon Weekend is underway in Philadelphia!

The city is ready to host 60,000 spectators, 3,000 volunteers, and the 30,000 runners who are taking part in the weekend of events capped off by the full marathon (26.2 miles) and half-marathon (13.1 miles) on Sunday.

Today, participants in Sunday's race had an opportunity to visit the runners' expo at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Among them was Ryan Campbell, who was excited to be there to pick up his race packet, "and to finally just throw away the calendar that you put together, like, six months ago.  So I did my last little training run this morning.  I can just relax."

Campbell, who is from Atlanta, arrived with his girlfriend a few days early so that, she pointed out, Ryan could enjoy his favorite food.

"You've got to plan ahead if you're going to eat scrapple," she tells KYW Newsradio.

The weekend will bring lots of detours and road closures for motorists.  Stay tuned to KYW Newsradio, CBS3, and CBS Philly for details.
