Judge Allows Port Authority Toll Increase
NEW YORK (AP) — Motorists will soon pay more to use the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's bridges and tunnels.
A federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday denied a request by the American Automobile Associations of New York and North Jersey to block next month's toll increase that's part of a four-year phased-in plan that was approved by Port Authority commissioners in 2011.
The automobile club had argued the increases violated federal law because they were to be used partly to cover redevelopment of the World Trade Center and weren't solely for transportation-related projects.
The Port Authority claimed it produced financial documents that show the hikes were needed for transportation-related capital projects.
Beginning Dec. 7, tolls for bridge and tunnel cash customers will increase by $1 to $14. The increase for E-ZPass motorists will be 75 cents.
