Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Winter Sports Season Opens

By Jay Lloyd

SPRING MOUNT, Pa. (CBS) -- Skiers and riders are already on the slopes of New England, and Pennsylvania isn't far behind.

That sound you hear is an arsenal of snow guns blasting out literally tons of snow each night here at nearby Spring Mountain.

Winter sports resorts from the Poconos to the Alleghenies are making snow.  Some have set tentative opening dates for the day after Thanksgiving.

Rick Buckman, who operates Spring Mountain, fired up his snowmaking system early this week.

"This is the second year in a row we've able to start our snowmaking in November," he tells KYW Newsradio. "It gives us a great head-start on the season."

And for skiers, getting a jump on the season means you can beat the crowds and often score discounts.

"This is great for us," Buckman says of the cold snap.  "I've always said, we're happiest when everybody else is complaining about the weather. Skiers and snowboarders live for this."

Check your favorite ski area's web site for their opening dates.
