Asthma Is Common And Potentially Fatal Problem Among Inner City Youth

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Asthma is a major health concern and it is particularly an issue in children who live in the city. In fact, it's the most common health condition and the number one reason for hospitalization and emergency department visits for children.

It is important to know that even when asthma appears to be stable, dangerous and life-threatening flares are common.

There are several things a parent can do to reduce complications. Most important is regular doctor visits. Do not wait any longer than three months to go back for a visit, even if the child seems like they're doing well.

You should also know that environmental contaminants could cause asthma and worsen it, including cigarette smoke and cockroaches.

The good news is that because it is common, we have excellent experience dealing with asthma and treating it.
