Those Seeking Assistance Get Free Help Signing Up For Health Insurance

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Saturday was the first day to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Healthcare Act as folks all over were seeking assistance finding an appropriate healthcare provider.

Get Covered America field organizer Pedro Rodriguez was one of many across the country working with the uninsured during the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period:

"Get Covered America is a national non-profit that is organized and doing outreach to people without health insurance," he says.

Karen from Philadelphia lost her job this year.  She came to the Northern Liberties Community Center Saturday to work with an enrollment helper to help find appropriate health insurance:

"Trying to find out what fits into our lifestyle and what I can afford."

She says the issue of health insurance weighs heavy on her:

"My daughters need their wisdom teeth taken out and I don't have the money to afford to have them done."

Open enrollment runs through February 15th.  Rodriguez adds, even if you're not interested in taking advantage of the Affordable Care Act...

"If you don't have health insurance, tax time comes, you're gonna have to pay a fine."

That fine is two-percent of your income, or $325 -- whichever is greater.
