Residents Near Possible Casino Location In South Philly Express Displeasure

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was a heated meeting Wednesday night in South Philadelphia as residents, in a loud voice, expressed their concerns over the possibility of the second city casino being built -- at the sports complex.

Many residents were saying they're trying to fight for their interests, speaking out against the possibility of a casino at 900 Packer Avenue -- the site of the Holiday Inn.

Union head John Dougherty tried to argue that community leaders didn't do enough to intervene in the selection process and a casino means jobs.

Many in the community say they already deal with issues at the sports complex, and how gambling there would be near schools and affect quality of life.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has not officially made a decision of who gets the second city casino license, but there is a public meeting at the end of the week where that announcement could come.

The three other possible locations are the 3000 block of Front Street -- which is in South Philly, along with 8th and Market and then the old Inquirer building at 400 North Broad.
