Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An organization that helps kids in need celebrates its 100th Anniversary.

As part of their centennial celebration, Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania held a reception Thursday night for the mentors and mentees who have participated in their program.

"My first little brother is 50-years-old now," says Tom Macolvoden.

Macolvoden has been a big brother since 1971.

He says he started right after he finished college, and it's one of the best decisions he ever made.

"I was sitting on the porch talking to my dad and I was complaining about something. My dad put the paper down and he says instead of complaining get off your butt and do something."

Over the last four decades Macolvoden has been a big brother for six boys.

"It's just been a tremendous experience for me as a big as well as I think for the littles. We each get an awful lot out of the program."
