Coffee May Reduce Risk Of Alzheimer's
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is one of the most widely quoted studies related to coffee consumption.
Researchers found that 3 to 5 cups of coffee each day reduced the risk of Alzheimer's. Of course that study can be set along side another study that says regular exercise prevents Alzheimer's as well as a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
So what do we do with all of this information?
Here is my philosophy: medical studies are like chapters in a book. They all play a role in the overall story. There is no doubt each chapter is important, but rarely is a finding all-encompassing. You keep things in perspective and you take it from there.
In the case of these studies and Alzheimer's, it is quite simple to approach. There is no doubt a well-balanced diet focused on healthy choices along with regular exercise is beneficial. As for the coffee, we know that in moderation it is also a healthy choice.
Lifestyle associations with illness are rarely one hundred percent but they are consistent.
