Grand Imperial Poobah: Bigger Injury, Foles Or Ryans?

By Stan "The Grand Imperial Poobah" Hochman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- (Editor's Note) Stan Hochman, a Daily News sports columnist for 55 years, has been appearing on 94WIP's morning show for over a year now, settling disputes (and starting new ones) as the "Grand Imperial Poobah." He brings that persona to CBSPhilly.com/poobah on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we welcome input on which issues you want the Poobah to take a good, hard look at. Send requests and ideas for The Poobah to WIPpoobah@gmail.com.

Without further ado, here's The Poobah.

Phil E. Phan: Nick Foles goes down with a busted clavicle. DeMeco Ryans is through for the season with a torn Achilles. Which injury will hurt the Eagles more?

Poobah: The Eagles are 6-and-2 at the halfway mark. The Eagles are 6-and-2 at the halfway mark. Keep chanting that to chase the doom and gloom that is inevitable after a key guy on offense and a key guy on defense go down in the same game. Mark Sanchez stepped right in for Nick Foles after a 22-month gap and played adequately. He will get better, after a week of practicing with the regulars. And while his numbers with the Jets are mediocre, he's got Chip Kelly calling the plays this time around.

Which takes us, reluctantly, to the loss of Ryans and both the tangibles and intangibles that will be missed. Ryans was a leader in the clubhouse, a mentor to the younger defensive players. You can't measure his contributions by numbers but he was a vital part of the culture. He was also a terrific linebacker who worked hard and played hard. The Eagles are 6-and-2 at the halfway mark. The Eagles are 6-and-2 at the halfway mark.
