Hundreds Turn Out For Annual "Sweet Caroline 5K" To Benefit CHOP

WARRINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- A couple hundred people were at Central Bucks South High School Sunday morning for the "Sweet Caroline 5K," benefiting Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The annual run was created three years ago in honor of a 15-year old CB-South student who died in 2011 from an undetected cardiac defect.
To those who knew Caroline Gallagher, she's remembered as a girl who always had a smile on her face, and a kind heart.
"She was always big on giving back," said Adam Daymon, a friend of Caroline Gallagher's family. "She loved helping people, and that's what we're doing here. We're turning something that wasn't so great into something that helps other people, and really captures who she was as a person."
Daymon organized this year's 5K, which was first started by classmates in 2012. In addition to awards for various age groups, Daymon said all proceeds are given to CHOP.
"Last year we raised $9,000," he said, "and we expect to be right around that same thing this year."
Daymon said the school community has a close relationship with CHOP, as the hospital also cared for his classmate, 13-year-old Timmy Raymond, who died in 2010 from Swine Flu.
