World Health Organization Concerned About Energy Drinks
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Energy drinks have been growing in popularity but the World Health Organization is questioning their use. In fact their goal is to decrease consumption, particularly among children and teens. And, the group is taking a major look at use in Europe where energy drink use has surged to 68% in teens and overuse has been linked to irregular heart beats, high blood pressure, vomiting and seizures.
There is also evidence of a risk of alcohol dependence and obesity among energy drink consumers.
Energy drinks grossed $12.5 billion worldwide in 2012.
