The Center Of Attention: 'The Giants Didn't Respect Us'

By Joseph Santoliquito

Jason Kelce, one of the NFL's top centers, shares his weekly thoughts with CBS Philly's Joe Santoliquito.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (CBS)— If it were up to Jason Kelce, he would have played Sunday night against the New York Giants. But the Eagles' center is still on the mend from hernia surgery on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The Eagles gouged New York for 448 yards in total offense, and a season-high 203 yards rushing.

"We were finally able to run the ball effectively, and I think that opened up the entire offense, it made the job much easier for Nick [Foles] and we saw a defense that was fairly cocky entering the game," Eagles' center Jason Kelce said. "We felt like they weren't going to scheme up anything against us. They gave us an opportunity to run the ball and we took advantage of it. If you look at what their defensive players said all last week, it looks like they didn't respect us.

"They didn't have the amount of respect that I'm sure they do now. They didn't jam the box as much as other teams have against us, they didn't put an emphasis on stopping the run, the way other teams have. They thought they could beat us man-to-man and that obviously didn't happen."

Though he's ahead of his rehab schedule, the target date to return is still Monday night, Nov. 10 at home against the Carolina Panthers.

"I do want to come back as soon as possible," Kelce said. "It's not a good feeling watching. I know I'm being helpful, but I'm going crazy on the sideline. I enjoy trying to help the guys out and being a good teammate and everything, but I want to be out there playing; I want to be in the heat of the battle. I want to get back as soon as I can, as soon as they let me. Hopefully, that's sooner rather than later."
