Packed Streets Marked The First Annual Old City Festival

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today was the first annual Old City Festival, a day for retailers and restaurateurs to showcase the best of what they have to offer.

The streets of Old City were packed with tens of thousands of people enjoying food and drinks and even some exhibits, like the one with Derek Weidman outside The Center for Art In Wood.

"I'm demonstrating a lathe, woodworking and wood turning in particular. You know, a really old, old technique and old machine."

Exposure to a new client base is important for the survival of shops like this. Old City District executive director Job Istzkowitz says that's exactly why they decided to start a new tradition.

"I think that a lot of people have forgotten or don't come as frequently to old city as they once did. As the city has grown and other neighborhoods have become popular."

And Job says they couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day.
