Ursinus College Savoring Bye Week With 5-0 Record

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It has been a fun season so far out in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, as the Division III Ursinus College football team sits at 5-0 as they enjoy their bye week. With a 4-0 record in Centennial Conference games, the Bears are tied for first in the conference.

Head coach Peter Gallagher says he has all precincts reporting this season.

"Our team is playing well right now, as far as the team is considered," Gallagher tells KYW Newsradio. "Certainly you have to look at our defense taking the football away 17 times and our offense only giving it away 3. There's some new names, there's some old names and everything is going as planned. Kind of taking everything in stride. And this team really has a lot of resolve for any issues that stand in their way and they've overcome them to this point."

The Ursinus offense is being led by senior quarterback Kevin Monahan who has completed 57% of his passes for 981 yards and 8 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions.

On defense, junior defensive lineman Steve Ambs has been huge this season. The Pottsgrove High School product leads the team with 46 tackles and his 13 tackles for loss and 8 sacks pace the conference.

"Its been an awesome ride so far," Ambs tells KYW Newsradio. "We came in from camp. We had a great camp. We had a great summer lifting program, we had a great camp overall in the fall and we're just riding it right now. Our defense is playing well, our offense is clicking and it has just been a fun ride so far."

While his stats are gaudy, Ambs is quick to say he isn't doing it alone.

"You can't focus on one guy on our defense," Ambs says. "Just because someone else will burn you then."

The Bears still have five games left in the regular season, including a showdown with the team they are tied with atop the conference, Johns Hopkins, on November 1st. But Gallagher says they are taking things one day at a time.

"The areas of focus right now are just to play hard and execute," Gallagher says. "What got us to this point is our focus, in our ability to get out on the practice field and play with some emotion and get excited about what we're doing and living in the day. I think that our kids are extremely focused in on that. "

Ursinus returns from the bye on Saturday, October 18th when they visit Juniata.
