Ornamental Pepper Plants May Be Better For Viewing Than Chewing

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Have you seen any of those ornamental pepper plants for sale? Some of the peppers look like big black pearls, others can be bright purple to yellow to red — all on one plant.

The tag on most ornamental pepper plants will say 'DO NOT EAT' for good reasons: First, they were grown for their looks - to be viewed, not chewed - so they could have been treated with pesticides you shouldn't swallow. Secondly, these puny peppers pack a powerful punch, they tend to be incredibly HOT.

If you grow them yourself from seed or seedlings, then it's up to you if you want to eat them; many people enjoy such super spicy homegrown hotties in chili, curry, or Asian cuisine.

But, no matter whether you grow them or buy a plant with peppers on it already, be careful around pets and children.

As you can see by the photo here, the candy colors of these pretty peppers can make a stunning centerpiece - but keep them out of reach so kids aren't tempted to taste them!
