Grand Imperial Poobah: McCoy Taking Himself Out A Big Deal?

By Stan "The Grand Imperial Poobah" Hochman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- (Editor's Note) Stan Hochman, a Daily News sports columnist for 55 years, has been appearing on 94WIP's morning show for over a year now, settling disputes (and starting new ones) as the "Grand Imperial Poobah." He brings that persona to CBSPhilly.com/poobah on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we welcome input on which issues you want the Poobah to take a good, hard look at. Send requests and ideas for The Poobah to WIPpoobah@gmail.com.

Without further ado, here's The Poobah.

Phil E. Phan: LeSean McCoy took himself out of the game in the closing moments with the Eagles desperately trying to hang onto the shrinking lead against the Rams. A big deal or much ado about nothing?

Poobah: Chip Kelly said it was no big deal during his Monday press conference. That makes it a really big deal in the Poobah's mind. Plus, nobody asked why McCoy did not get back in the game before the Eagles gave the Rams one last chance. The idea that McCoy and Darren Sproles are in some kind of "rotation" brought back memories of Fred Shero and the way he used his goalies, Bernie Parent and Bobby Taylor. Parent had played in something like 36 consecutive games when Shero announced that Taylor would start in goal late in the season. 'Why?', the writers asked.

"Because it's his turn," Shero answered.

A little humor there to ease the angst surrounding a team that is 4-and-1 despite a struggling run game. Was McCoy hurt when he took himself out of the game? Was he afraid he might fumble for the second time in the game? Is his confidence so low that he did not want to be out there in crunch time? If you believe Chip that he does not alter his play calling depending on which running back is in the game, he has some land in the Okefenokee swamp he'd like to sell you. Maybe we will get the answers when the writers question McCoy today. Maybe.
