Top Chefs From South Jersey Team Up With Camden Soup Kitchen To Feed The Hungry

By Suzanne Monaghan

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- The South Jersey Hot Chefs volunteered their time and culinary expertise to cook for the hungry and homeless at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen in Camden Monday night. And the students in the kitchen's culinary arts program also took part in the effort.

Parmesan crusted cauliflower casserole, roasted corn on the cob, caraway braised cabbage, oven-roasted chicken with gravy and apple crumb crisp were all on the menu. Karen Talarico is Executive Director of the soup kitchen.

""We got a buy-in from the New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger and they donated all of the fresh produce that went into today's meal," Talarico said.

The chef's couldn't prepare the menu until they saw what the farmers delivered. Element's Cafe owner and Executive Chef Fred Kellermann was one of the six chefs on hand.

"Everybody's just happy, walking around, having a good time, telling jokes, but yet doing some very serious work. They're feeding 300-400 people for dinner here and to be part of that and just see the joy that they have doing it is just awesome," Kellermann said.

The event was organized in part to bring attention to World Hunger Month.
