Arrest Made In Sexual Assault, Robbery In Chinatown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say an arrest has been made in connection with a sexual assault and robbery in the city's Chinatown neighborhood.

Police say Brandon Menley, 29, of Philadelphia, is charged with Attempted Murder, Rape, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Robbery and related offenses.

A suspect now in police custody 36 hours after police say his vicious attack was caught on tape.

"She was attacked. She was sexually assaulted and robbed. Also was struck over the head and sustained some injuries as a result of an unknown instrument or a metal object," Captain John Darby of Special Victims Unit said.

Menley was charged Monday night after police spent the afternoon questioning him.

Sources say Menley was picked up at a homeless shelter on the 900 block of Hamilton Street after he was identified from surveillance video. Police say he walked into an art studio on 9th Street in Chinatown Sunday morning and attacked a 45-year-old woman in the business.

He allegedly hit the victim in the head with a hammer-like metal object wrapped in a bag several times, then pushed her into a back office where police say he sexually assaulted her. Police say he left with $600 in cash, allegedly seen in the video grinning as he put on his hat and walked out.

"It's horrible. It's disgusting," a resident said.

Many in the area outraged by the attack are now relieved that the accused attacker is off the street and in police custody.

The victim was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where she was treated for head lacerations.
