Catholic School on Main Line Packs Thousands of Meals in Mission of Mercy

By Steve Tawa

MERION STATION, Pa. (CBS) -- Students at a Catholic school on the Main Line gathered today to put together thousands of meals for needy children in more desperate countries.

Today, sixth through eighth graders at Waldron Mercy Academy converted the school's gymnasium into an assembly line to package 20,000 meals for the international relief agency Stop Hunger Now.

The meals will be shipped to children in need, mostly at schools and orphanages.

Thirteen-year-old Payton Fox and others put rice, soy, and dehydrated vegetables into bags.

"Then, runners take it over here, where people weigh it t make sure it's the right weight for shipping.  And then we seal them with a heat sealer.  Then they are taken to people who package them into the boxes," Fox explained.

Ava Donatucci, 13, feels that they're making a difference.

"One child dies every six seconds from hunger," she points out.

And 14-year-old Katie Mastriano says she feels privileged to give to such a worthy cause.

"I'm happy that I get to help other people have food," she said today.

Stop Hunger Now's current focus includes West Africa and El Salvador, but it follows 65 countries in greatest need, distributing food and other aid to crisis-burdened areas.
