Villanova Heads North For Saturday Match-Up With Maine

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The Villanova Wildcats are on a roll.

They have won three straight games, outscoring their opponents, 140-44 in the process. They are ranked as high as #5 in FCS. The Wildcats will look to continue this surge on Saturday when they travel up to Orono to take on the Maine Black Bears in Colonial Athletic Association action.

Last time out Villanova rolled Penn, 41-7, at Franklin Field.

"We came out really fast," Villanova head coach Andy Talley tells KYW Newsradio. "Penn traditionally has given us a very rough game and I knew we'd have to be ready. And we were. We scored (21) points in the first quarter, John Robertson was very accurate, all our guys were running the ball pretty well. Defensively, we really held them down pretty well."

Maine is 2-2 this season and coming off a 27-24 win at Towson in their CAA opener. One of their losses came when they stepped up a level and took on Boston College. The Black Bears dropped that one 40-10. If you take out that game, though, Maine's defensive numbers are pretty impressive. In their other three contests, they've held opponents to just over 14 points a game.

"They have a terrific front seven on defense," Talley says. "One of the very best in the CAA, if not the best."

As for the other side of the football . . .

"Offensively, they've been struggling a little bit," Talley says. "But they found a way to get some points on the board against Towson. It's a gritty, gutsy team and they protect their home field better than anyone in the CAA. When you travel to Orono, Maine, you better tie it down."

Last season, Villanova lost to Maine at Villanova Stadium, 37-35.

Saturday's game in Orono will kickoff at 12:30pm.
